This past weekend, members of the Native Sun team took part in the Science is All of Us Celebrations hosted by the Science Museum of Minnesota. This annual series of events celebrate BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) professionals, educators, students, and community members in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Saturday, January 13 was the Native Americans in STEM day, and Native Sun and Solar Bear were excited to jointly host an exhibit! Our hands-on activity involved making bracelets with beads that change color with exposure to UV light. Kids ranging from preschool-age to high school students stopped by to make their own bracelets and learn about the power of the sun.

Events like these are an amazing opportunity to not only help spark kids’ interest in STEM and expose them to potential career pathways, but also to help them to see themselves in these professions and introduce them to the many Native STEM role models in our region.

Make sure to check out the two remaining Science is All of Us events at the Science Museum of Minnesota:

  • The Latinx Americans in STEM Day on 1/20 from 11am-3pm
